The best Chai AI alternatives depend on which wall you hit. If it's the new pay-per-message pieces, Character.AI (strictly SFW) and JanitorAI (adult-friendly, with a free built-in model) give you a big bot library without the meter. For adult roleplay with far more free messages, try SpicyChat or CrushOn AI. If your bots keep forgetting you, try Nomi. If you want pictures of the character or ready-made adult characters and stories, look at OurDream AI or RealChat, our own product.

Each pick is judged against Chai itself: free messaging versus pieces, memory, adult content policy, ready-made versus user-made bots, browser versus app, and how you pay. Plans and prices are as listed in October 2026.

Why people leave Chai, and where to go instead

Chai still does one thing better than almost anyone: it gives you an enormous library of user-made bots you can open and talk to within seconds on your phone, with room for romance and roleplay (its App Store listing is rated 18+). Here are the walls people hit as of October 2026, and the alternative that removes each one.

  • Pieces on every message. Since September 2026, every Chai message costs at least one piece of in-app currency, and the free daily check-in pays 70 pieces. Try: Character.AI or JanitorAI.
  • The price of going paid. On the US App Store in mid-October, Premium cost $13.99 a month and Ultra $29.99, and even Premium still meters some features in pieces. Try: JanitorAI's free model, or the entry tiers of SpicyChat and CrushOn AI, both under $6.
  • Bots that forget or repeat themselves. Try: Nomi or Kindroid.
  • Filters, or wanting adult roleplay. Try: SpicyChat, CrushOn AI or JanitorAI. Skip Character.AI.
  • The phone-only feel. Try: JanitorAI, SpicyChat or CrushOn AI, all at home in a desktop browser, or Character.AI on the web.
  • Wanting pictures of the character. Try: OurDream AI or RealChat.
  • Wanting a story without writing the setup. Try: RealChat's ready-made scenarios.
  • A favorite bot who is male. Try: a community library (Character.AI, JanitorAI, SpicyChat) or a builder like Kindroid. RealChat's catalogue is female characters only for now.

Most people leave Chai over one specific wall, so start with the app that removes yours.

The free fix for pieces: Character.AI and JanitorAI

Both keep Chai's core loop, a big library of other people's bots, and neither charges you per message.

Character.AI: the same browse-and-chat loop, without the meter

Character.AI: official website character.ai

Best for: SFW character chat with a huge library and no per-message meter

The largest mainstream character-chat platform, with a huge library of user-made bots and its own character creator. Free conversations are unlimited, with in-chat ads, peak-hour queues and daily swipe caps as the trade-off. c.ai+ removes ads and adds priority access, stronger models and enhanced memory.

  • Huge user-made bot library
  • Unlimited free conversations
  • Web plus iOS and Android apps

Watch out: Strict moderation: romance is filtered and adult content isn't allowed.

Pricing: Free; c.ai+ $9.99/month or $94.99/year

Visit character.ai

No alternative feels more like Chai. You scroll a giant library, tap a bot and you're talking within seconds. The difference is what a long evening costs: Chai charges a piece for every message, while Character.AI's free plan doesn't count them. It also works properly in a desktop browser, which matters if Chai's phone-first design was part of the problem.

Content is what decides the move. If your Chai chats were adventure, banter or fandom characters, this is the easiest switch on the list. If they leaned romantic or adult, you'll run into the filter on the first night.

JanitorAI: free, adult-friendly and at home in a browser

JanitorAI: official website janitorai.com

Best for: Free adult-friendly roleplay in a browser with a big community library

A web-first roleplay site with a very large community bot library and a free built-in model, JanitorLLM, that needs no API key. Janitor+ raises the context to a reported 40K tokens, and you can optionally connect your own API key or proxy for stronger models.

  • Free built-in model, no key needed
  • Adult content toggle for adults
  • Optional own key or Janitor+ Router

Watch out: The free model has a small context (about 8–9K tokens) and peak-time queues.

Pricing: Free; Janitor+ $12.99/month; API costs vary

Visit janitorai.com

JanitorAI is the replacement Chai threads name most often. It began as a website, so it feels native on a laptop, and its iOS and Android apps arrived as a beta on February 7, 2026. That makes it the closest thing to Chai's old free tier for adult roleplay.

Memory is where it resembles free Chai. In a long roleplay, early details fall out of the bot's context. Regulars fix that by connecting a stronger model through their own API key or a proxy and paying the model provider per token. That step is optional, and it's where most trouble starts, so read our guide to using Janitor AI safely, API keys and proxies included before you paste a key anywhere.

Adult roleplay with a big bot library: SpicyChat and CrushOn AI

Both run community libraries in the spirit of Chai, allow adult content for adult users and give away far more free chat than Chai's check-in.

SpicyChat: far more free messages than Chai's check-in

SpicyChat: official website spicychat.ai

Best for: Adult roleplay with a big community library and lots of free messages

A web-based roleplay platform with a big community library where adult content is allowed. Paid tiers mainly buy longer context, conversation images and better models, and the top tier reaches 16K context and adds text-to-speech.

  • Big community bot library
  • Adult content allowed
  • Reported 2,000 free messages a day

Watch out: The free tier has 4K context and 180-token replies, plus ads and queues.

Pricing: $5.95 / $19.95 / $29.95 per month since Sept 8, 2026

Visit spicychat.ai

For adult roleplay with community bots, SpicyChat answers Chai's meter most directly: a signed-in free user can send many times more messages a day than Chai's check-in covers. If sheer volume is what you miss, start here.

If you pay, pay on the web, because app-store prices can differ. Prices rose on September 8, 2026, but subscriptions you leave unchanged keep their old rate. True Supporter is the tier that answers most memory complaints: it doubles the context to 8,192 tokens and adds images inside conversations.

CrushOn AI: unlimited chat on free models, credits for the good ones

CrushOn AI: official website crushon.ai

Best for: Unlimited chat on free models, with credits for stronger ones

A browser-based character roleplay site with a large community library and adult settings for verified 18+ users. The free plan gives unlimited chat on free models plus 100 monthly credits for Pro models. Paid plans mainly buy more credits and longer memory.

  • Large community library
  • 100 Pro credits a month free
  • 8K memory on the free plan

Watch out: No official App Store or Google Play app, and credits don't roll over.

Pricing: $5.99 (Standard) to $199.99 (Imperial) per month

Visit crushon.ai

CrushOn flips Chai's logic. Chai meters every message, while CrushOn meters only its stronger Pro models, so you spend credits only when a scene deserves a better model. If what you loved about Chai was volume, this is the nearest thing to the app before pieces.

It's a browser product first. Android users can install an APK from CrushOn's own site, and iPhone users chat in the browser. The paid ladder is long, but someone coming from Chai rarely needs more than the bottom tier or two. Plan names and limits change often, so read the pricing page before you subscribe.

When the bots keep forgetting: Nomi and Kindroid

Chai bots are fun for a quick scene and hazy a week later. If that's why you're leaving, you'll trade the giant library for companions you build yourself, and you'll pay from the start. Our ranking of AI chatbots by how well they remember goes deeper. Here's how the two leaders compare with Chai.

Nomi: the companion that remembers

Nomi: official website nomi.ai

Best for: Long-term memory and consistent personalities

A companion app focused on long-term memory and consistent personalities. Instead of a bot marketplace, one subscription lets you build up to 10 companions, with group chats, on the web, iOS and Android.

  • Frequently cited memory leader
  • Up to 10 companions per plan
  • One flat tier, no add-ons

Watch out: There's no community bot library, and the free tier is tight.

Pricing: $15.99/month, $39.99/quarter or $99.99/year

Visit nomi.ai

Nomi works the opposite way to Chai: there's nothing to browse, only companions you create and keep. If you had a rotation of three or four favorite Chai bots, you can rebuild all of them under one plan. Don't count on the free tier as an escape from pieces, though. At around 50 messages a day with one companion, it's tighter than Chai's check-in. On the yearly plan, Nomi works out to about $8.33 a month, below the monthly price of Chai Premium, and adult content is allowed for adult users.

Kindroid: one deep companion, built your way

Kindroid homepage with the headline "Meet Your Kindroid", a smiling man on a video call with an AI companion, and Log in and Sign up buttons.PS

Best for: One deeply configured companion with voice and selfies

A companion app built around deep personality configuration, including backstory and directives, with voice and selfies on the web, iOS and Android. It's designed for one deep companion rather than a library of bots.

  • Detailed backstory and directives
  • Strong voice, including cloning
  • Lower price on the web

Watch out: The free Lite tier reportedly ended on October 1, 2026; new users get a short trial.

Pricing: $13.99/month on the web or $139.99/year; add-ons extra

Visit kindroid.ai

Kindroid suits the Chai user who really only had one bot. You get far more say in who that companion is than a typical Chai bot definition gives you, and voice is a genuine strength. It isn't an exit if you're leaving Chai to stop paying, though. Subscribe on the web, because the same plan costs $15.99 through the app stores. Also watch the add-ons: Ultra at +$24.99 and MAX at +$59.99 stack, taking a full setup to about $98.97 a month.

Pictures, ready-made characters and stories: OurDream AI and RealChat

On both, the character matters more than the size of a bot library, and both put images into the conversation.

OurDream AI: a media studio with chat attached

OurDream AI: official website ourdream.ai

Best for: Custom companions with images, short video and voice

An 18+ AI companion platform built around a detailed companion creator and generated images, short video and voice. Premium includes unlimited standard chat and 1,000 Dreamcoins a month, while media and advanced models are paid in coins.

  • Detailed companion creator
  • Group chats of up to 12 characters
  • Images, video and voice calls

Watch out: Media is metered in Dreamcoins, so heavy use costs extra.

Pricing: $19.99/month or $119.88/year (Oct 2026)

Visit ourdream.ai

Chai is a text app with media on the side, and OurDream is the reverse. Pick it when what you want from a character is pictures, short clips or a voice call, and you'd rather design that character than browse a library. The head-to-head below shows how it stacks up against Chai on price and platform.

RealChat (our product): ready-made characters, stories and photos

RealChat homepage: dark-themed AI girlfriend chat platform with pink headline, sign-in buttons, character avatars, category filters and thumbnails.

Best for: Ready-made adult characters, roleplay scenarios and character photos

An AI companion platform that runs in the browser, with a catalogue of ready-made characters with their own looks, personalities and backgrounds, including anime-style ones. You can also create your own character, play ready-made roleplay scenarios and get AI-generated photos from characters in the chat.

  • Ready-made characters, incl. anime style
  • Ready-made roleplay scenarios
  • In-chat photos, 18+ mode for adults
  • No auto-renewal

Watch out: The catalogue is female characters only for now.

Pricing: 1, 3 or 12-month plans with credits; no auto-renewal

Visit real-chat.ai

RealChat sits between Chai's library and a companion builder. Instead of digging through thousands of user-made bots, you pick from a catalogue of ready-made characters. Each one keeps her personality, remembers the meaningful details of your conversation and shifts her tone to fit the story. If you'd rather not write an opening yourself, the library of ready-made roleplay scenarios drops you straight into a setup.

Photos work like messages. Ask in the chat (“send me a photo by the window”) or use the photo menu, and adult users also get an 18+ photo mode. Any reply can be regenerated, and a note in parentheses, like “(slow down)” or “(be bolder)”, steers the character without breaking the scene. You can talk to any catalogue character before signing up and create your first character for free. Photos need an account and credits.

Chai vs OurDream: library app or media studio

The two get compared because both are adult companion products with romance on the menu. Day to day, though, they're built for different habits.

A brushed-metal balance scale holding a steaming white teacup on one pan and a softly glowing frosted crescent moon on the other, weighing Chai against alternatives.
Chai meters messages in pieces; OurDream meters media in coins.
  • Characters. Chai is a library: thousands of community-made bots, and you pick one and talk. OurDream is a builder: you design a companion's appearance, voice, personality and scenario, and you can run group chats with up to 12 characters.
  • Images, video and voice. On Chai these are extras, and according to a CHAI Team email shared by a user, even Premium users can be charged pieces for image and video generation. On OurDream they're the point. Images, video and voice calls are all paid in Dreamcoins: a five-second standard video costs 100 coins, and voice calls cost 50 coins a minute.
  • Pricing. Chai charges pieces per message beyond the free daily check-in, then offers Premium at $13.99 or Ultra at $29.99 a month. OurDream's homepage listed $19.99 a month in October 2026, or $119.88 paid upfront for a year (advertised as $9.99 a month). Both plans include 1,000 Dreamcoins a month, and a first yearly subscription adds 1,000 bonus coins. Standard chat generally costs subscribers no coins, while free users generally pay a coin per standard message. A Deluxe tier runs $59.99 a month, or $29.99 a month billed annually, with 5,000 coins. Check the final total at checkout.
  • Content. Both are adult products. Chai's App Store listing is rated 18+, and OurDream, operated by Dream Studio USA, Inc., is an 18+ platform.
  • Platform. Chai is a native iOS and Android app. OurDream runs in the browser and offers an add-to-home-screen shortcut rather than a native app, so it behaves like an app on your phone and like a full site on a laptop.

Stick with Chai, or a library app like JanitorAI, if you like browsing other people's bots and mostly text. Pick OurDream if you want one or a few companions you designed yourself, with pictures, clips and voice, and you're comfortable budgeting coins on top of the subscription. Neither is a free option for heavy daily chat: Chai's check-in runs out at about 70 standard messages, and OurDream's media runs on coins.

Chai and the alternatives side by side

Plans and prices are as listed in October 2026, and web prices can be lower than in-app ones. For what each app allows in adult chats and images, see our deeper comparison of AI sex chat apps.

Subscriptions, credits and tokens: what a month really costs

On free messaging alone, the most generous options right now are Character.AI (unlimited, SFW), CrushOn AI (unlimited on free models), JanitorAI (a free built-in model) and SpicyChat (a high daily cap). Nomi, Kindroid and OurDream AI are paid-first. Once you pay, the pricing model matters more than the headline price, because almost every app sells “unlimited” something and meters something else.

  • Flat subscription: Nomi, c.ai+. You pay one price, and chat isn't metered. c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year (about $7.92 a month). Nomi costs $15.99 a month or $99.99 a year (about $8.33). A typical month runs $8–16, with no surprises.
  • Subscription plus coins: Chai Premium, OurDream AI, Kindroid. The plan covers everyday text, and the heavier stuff costs extra: pieces for some Chai features, Dreamcoins beyond OurDream's monthly 1,000, or Kindroid's add-ons. A typical month is the base price, $13.99–19.99, if you mostly text, and noticeably more if you lean on images, video or voice.
  • Tiered plans and credits: SpicyChat, CrushOn AI. Each step up buys more context, stronger models or more credits. Most people coming from Chai land on the bottom tier or the one above it, roughly $6–20 a month. CrushOn's credits don't roll over, so buy for the month you'll actually use.
  • Pay per token: JanitorAI with your own key. The built-in model costs nothing, and Janitor+ is $12.99 a month. If you connect your own API key, the bill comes from the model provider and scales with how much you chat and which model you pick. That stays small for light use and adds up for long roleplays on premium models.
  • Pay per message: Chai's new free tier. Founder Will Beauchamp announced on Chai's official subreddit on September 8, 2026, that every message would cost pieces and better models would cost more. He pointed to GPU prices that doubled this year, as CompanionHunt reported. A standard message costs one piece and an Ultra-model message costs two. The daily check-in has paid 70 pieces since October 6, plus 5 per rewarded ad, according to Roborhythms. It disappears while you hold more than 100 pieces, so stockpiling doesn't help. Beyond that, packs start at 200 pieces for $2.79. Paying doesn't fully end the meter: a CHAI Team email shared by a user says some advanced models, image and video generation and extra memory can still cost pieces on Premium. Some accounts see “Ruby” and “Diamond” plans with a weekly piece allowance instead, reported as an A/B test rather than a change for everyone. If you'd be buying a pack every week, a flat plan elsewhere costs about the same or less.

RealChat uses a single payment for 1, 3 or 12 months, with no auto-renewal. It covers unlimited messages plus credits for photos and character generation. Plan credits expire with the plan, while credits from separate packs never do. Current prices are on the RealChat plans page.

What Reddit threads keep saying

Read r/ChaiApp and the “Chai alternative” threads for a while and the same themes keep coming back:

  • The pieces change and the ads. The anger is less about any one price than about paying per message, or watching ads to earn pieces, in an app people used to enjoy for free.
  • Paying doesn't fix repetition. A recurring complaint is that Premium replies still loop and repeat, which makes the subscription feel worse than its price.
  • JanitorAI and SpicyChat are the default answers. When someone asks for a free-ish replacement with community bots and adult roleplay, these two come up first.
  • Character.AI gets suggested, then dropped. People like the library, then leave over the filter.
  • Memory seekers get sent to Nomi or Kindroid, usually with the reminder that both are built around paying.
  • API key setups come with warnings. JanitorAI regulars tell newcomers to start on the free model, stick to the official site and think twice about where they paste a key.

Bringing your Chai character with you

Chai has no export tool for bots, so moving a favorite means rebuilding it by hand. That works better than you'd expect, as long as you copy the right things before you leave.

  1. Copy the definition while you still have access. If you made the bot, copy every text field it has. If it's someone else's, copy the public description and the greeting.
  2. Save the voice. Pick three to five replies that sound exactly like the character and paste them into a note. They'll become example dialogue, and they shape the voice more than the description does.
  3. Write down what the bot knew about you. Note your name or nickname, what you are to each other and a three-line summary of the story so far.
  4. Rebuild it in the new creator. The description goes into the personality or definition field, the greeting into the first message, and the saved replies into example dialogue where the app has that field. In companion apps like Nomi and Kindroid, fold them into the backstory instead.
  5. Add your persona and the recap. Put your notes from step 3 into the persona field or an opening note, so the first scene doesn't start from zero.
  6. Test ten messages, then adjust. A different model will sound a little different. If the voice is off, describe concrete speech habits instead of adding adjectives, then regenerate.

Our guide to writing an AI character people actually want to talk to walks through each of those fields, from the greeting to the speech style. If your favorite Chai bot is male, rebuild him in JanitorAI, SpicyChat or a builder like Kindroid. RealChat's catalogue is female characters only for now, and its creator doesn't make male characters yet.

If you only try two

The fastest way to choose is to run one free and one paid option side by side for a week, with the same rebuilt character in both.

  • Free, SFW: Character.AI. Free, adult-friendly: JanitorAI or SpicyChat.
  • Paid, for memory: Nomi on the yearly plan.
  • Paid, for one deep companion with voice: Kindroid, bought on the web.
  • Paid, for media: OurDream AI, if you'll budget for Dreamcoins.
  • Ready-made characters, scenarios and photos: RealChat, with a few free messages before you even sign up.

After the week, keep whichever app you find yourself opening first, and cancel the other before it renews.
