The riskiest moment on Janitor AI usually isn't a chat. It's pasting an API key into a proxy someone shared on Discord, or installing an “app” Janitor never made. The platform itself, run by JanitorAI Inc. at janitorai.com and in official iOS and Android apps, is legitimate and has no known malware, so for adults it's generally safe to use. The real risks sit around it, and each one has a simple fix. Everything below is current as of October 12, 2026.
The quick verdict, threat by threat
Each threat gets its own section further down. Here's the short version.
| Threat | Risk | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Viruses and malware (official site and app) | Low | Use janitorai.com and the official store apps only |
| Clone sites and fake apps | Medium | Type the domain yourself; never install an APK |
| Account takeover | Low to medium | Email code or unique password, 2FA on your Google or Discord, review sessions |
| Your own API key | Medium | Dedicated key, hard spend cap, revoke when done |
| Free shared reverse proxies | High | Avoid them; use JLLM, your own key or the janitor+ Router |
| Chat privacy on the platform | Medium | Chats are stored, so keep real names and addresses out |
| Use by minors | Not allowed (18+) | Age check via k-ID in AU/BR/UK |
Is Janitor AI a virus or malware?
No. Janitor AI is a website plus official apps in the App Store and Google Play. Chatting on janitorai.com doesn't require downloading anything.
The malware risk lives around the brand, not inside it: “Janitor AI APK” files on download portals, fake desktop clients, browser extensions promising an “unfiltered” Janitor, and ad-heavy lookalike sites. If something wants you to install a file to use Janitor on a computer, it isn't Janitor.
How to tell the official site from clones
The real address is janitorai.com: one word, no hyphen, dot com. The help center is help.janitorai.com and the status page is status.janitorai.com. Search results are crowded with lookalikes that JanitorAI Inc. doesn't run:
- janitor.ai, an unrelated creative-writing tools site that shows Google ads;
- janitor-ai.io, an editorial site about Janitor AI that earns affiliate commissions;
- janitor-ai.org, janitorai.co.uk, janitorai.best and chatjanitor.com, other third-party sites.
Some of them publish their own privacy policies, which regularly get quoted as if they were Janitor's, and some still carry outdated claims. Bookmark janitorai.com, and never enter your login, email code or API key on any other domain.
Is there an official Janitor AI app, and is it safe to download?
Yes, and it's safe when you get it from the right place. Janitor's official app has been in public beta on iOS and Android since February 2026, and Janitor's help center says the store links it lists are the only official JanitorAI apps. In early October 2026 both stores listed it as “Janitor: Interactive Stories,” rated 17+, with version 2.6.0 out since late September. Store names change, so tap the download link on janitorai.com or in the help center rather than searching the store.
- The app is free and covers most of the website's core features, plus push notifications.
- NSFW content is off by default in the app because of App Store guidelines; that setting is managed on the website.
- There's no official APK. Janitor distributes the Android app through Google Play only, so any APK, “mod” or “premium unlocked” build is unofficial by definition.
- Unofficial apps with similar names can turn up in stores. Check that the developer is JanitorAI before you install.
Is Janitor AI safe from hackers?
Account protection got noticeably stronger in 2026. According to Janitor's changelog, you can sign in with email, Google, Apple, Discord or X.com. Since May 2026 the default email sign-in is a one-time code sent to your inbox, which Janitor says helps stop bot attacks and unauthorized logins. Password sign-in still exists if you prefer it.
Account settings also list every active session with its device, location, IP address and last-active time, and let you sign out a single session or all other devices at once. You can link or disconnect sign-in methods, as long as one stays on the account. If you suspect someone got in, start there.
Does Janitor AI have two-factor authentication?
As of mid-October 2026, the changelog lists two-factor authentication, by authenticator app and SMS, as coming soon rather than live. Guides with step-by-step Janitor 2FA instructions are describing a feature that has only been announced. Switch it on once it appears in your settings. Until then, your email inbox or your Google, Apple or Discord account is effectively the second lock, so that's the account to harden.
Is it safe to log in with Google, Discord or Apple?
Yes. With a social login, Janitor never sees your Google or Discord password: the provider vouches for you and shares basic profile details such as your name and email. The catch is that your Janitor account is only as secure as that account, so turn on its own two-factor authentication. You can remove a linked login in Janitor's settings, or revoke access from the provider's side under third-party connections in your Google Account or Authorized Apps in Discord.
Has Janitor AI been hacked?
No breach of Janitor AI's own systems has been publicly confirmed. “I got hacked” stories usually trace back to something outside the platform: a password reused from a leaked site, a fake login page, or a key stolen through a shared proxy. Outages get mistaken for hacks too, since vanished bots and error screens can look a lot like a hijacked account.
Is it safe to use your own API key or a reverse proxy?
This is the part of Janitor where a mistake can cost you money or privacy. A Janitor bot is a character definition; the language model that writes the replies is a separate layer, and our explainer on how AI roleplay works under the hood shows how model, character and context fit together. Janitor lets you swap that model, and each route sends your messages somewhere different:
- JanitorLLM (JLLM). The free in-house model. Your chats stay between you and Janitor, and there's nothing to configure or leak. The safest default.
- Your own key with an official provider such as OpenAI, OpenRouter, DeepSeek or Gemini. Your messages also go to that provider under its privacy policy, and the key is a credential tied to your billing. Janitor's own proxy quickstart tells you to treat it “like a password.”
- A free shared reverse proxy passed around on Discord or Reddit. An unknown operator sits between you and the model, can log every prompt and reply, and can keep any key you route through it. This is the riskiest option on the platform.
Subscribers have a fourth route. The janitor+ Router lets janitor+ members use third-party models on the web without a proxy or a pasted key, and it shows the per-token cost before you chat.
Key hygiene that actually protects you
- Create a dedicated key just for Janitor, so you can kill it without breaking anything else.
- Set a hard spending limit at the provider, or keep only a small prepaid balance on that account.
- Paste it only into the API settings on janitorai.com, never into a clone site or a stranger's proxy.
- Never show it in Discord, Reddit posts or screenshots of your settings.
- Revoke it when you stop using Janitor, delete your account or suspect a leak. A revoked key stops working everywhere at once.
Who can see your Janitor AI chats?
Three parties come up here, and the answers differ.
Other users and bot creators
Other users can't browse your conversations, and that includes whoever made the bot you're talking to. Creators see only aggregate view and chat counters on their character card; Janitor has no interface that lets a creator open an individual user's chat. If you write and publish your own characters, the same rule applies to you: you'll see numbers, never transcripts.
Janitor itself
The platform does store your chats. Its privacy policy lists chat conversations as user content it collects, and among the uses of that data it names content moderation and research and development to improve its AI systems. So don't assume staff “can't” see anything, and don't treat a roleplay like an encrypted messenger. If you use an outside model, that provider receives your messages too.
In Janitor's favor, its Safety page says it never sells personal data or shares private conversations with third parties for advertising or commercial purposes, and that you can access, correct or delete your data. Deletion sits in account settings, and an August 2026 update added a 30-day restore window, so your data isn't gone the instant you click.
Private bots, unlisted bots and personas
- Private bots open only for you.
- Unlisted bots are hidden from search, but anyone with the direct link can open them. Anything personal belongs in private.
- Personas, the profile you play as, aren't published, but they're sent to the model and stored with the chat. Give yours a made-up name, not your real one, your city or your workplace.
Is Janitor AI safe now?
Yes. As of October 12, 2026, Janitor's status page shows the service running normally, and no security incident has been reported. The latest trouble was reliability, not security: StatusGator logged a cluster of incidents on September 11–14, 2026, with the site not loading, characters failing to load and 429 “too many requests” errors, including a September 11 outage of about 10 hours. When Janitor misbehaves, check status.janitorai.com, the official status page, before you start resetting passwords.
The 2026 changes that matter for safety:
- February: the official iOS and Android app enters public beta.
- April 24: age verification starts in Australia and Brazil.
- May: a one-time email code becomes the default sign-in.
- June 15: age verification extends to the UK.
- By late July: the janitor+ Router offers outside models without pasted keys.
- August: active-session management and connected-login controls arrive in account settings.
The 18+ rule and age checks
Janitor AI is not for minors. Its Terms of Service restrict the platform to users 18 and older and prohibit anyone younger from using it or creating an account, and the site hosts NSFW bots.
Age checks run only for connections from Australia, Brazil and the UK. There, Janitor asks for a one-time verification through k-ID: an on-device facial age estimate, an ID scan or an AgeKey. Janitor receives only a yes or no on whether you're over 18. The check follows your IP address, so a VPN exiting in one of those countries can trigger it too. Janitor says it has no plans to expand it elsewhere, so users in the US and Canada aren't affected. Any other site demanding your ID in Janitor's name is a red flag.
What Reddit users say: recurring safety themes
On r/JanitorAI_Official, the official subreddit, and across Reddit more widely, the same concerns keep resurfacing:
- Bot creators reading chats. The most repeated worry, usually answered by experienced users the same way: creators see counters, not conversations.
- Proxy key theft. Regular warnings about free proxies shared on Discord that collect keys and logs, typically followed by advice to use your own capped key or the official Router.
- Age-check backlash. Users in Australia, Brazil and the UK push back on the k-ID requirement, mostly over privacy and hassle.
- Queues and outages. Frustration spikes during incidents like the one on September 11–14.
- The future of the free tier. Debate over whether janitor+ is worth it, and worry that the free experience will get worse.
- Fake apps and clones. Threads flagging unofficial apps and lookalike domains.
The overall tone is telling: few people think the site itself is malicious. The concern is almost always the third parties around it, and how much the platform stores.

A safety checklist for Janitor AI
- Bookmark janitorai.com and type it yourself; don't log in through links in comments or ads.
- Install the app only through the links on janitorai.com or the help center, and never an APK.
- Use the email code or a unique password, and turn on two-factor authentication for your Google, Apple or Discord account.
- Review active sessions in account settings and sign out any device you don't recognize.
- Set any bot with personal details to private, not unlisted.
- Keep your real name, address and workplace out of chats and personas.
- Stick with JLLM or the official Router if you don't want to handle keys.
- If you do use a key, make a dedicated one with a hard spend cap and revoke it when you're done.
- Skip anonymous shared proxies entirely.
- Check status.janitorai.com before assuming you've been hacked.
Used this way, Janitor AI is as safe as most account-based chat services, and its riskiest parts are optional. If you'd rather not manage keys at all, companion platforms such as RealChat, where characters come ready to chat, bundle the model in, so there's nothing to paste. And if you're weighing Janitor against other adult-capable apps on features rather than safety, our roundup of AI sex chat apps covers that ground.
